Parting Shot

— At the bottom of Page 1 in each day’s The Dispatch, with the calendars, weather and The Five Questions, is a small headshot of someone who lives in the newspaper’s readership area. The feature is labeled “Local Folks,” and normally staff photographers on their daily rounds take the pictures used there. During Wassail Fest, an event held in downtown Columbus in December, Dispatch editor Birney Imes set up a background and took pictures of visitors to the newspaper for the feature. “Maybe it was the night or the season, but each person photographed seemed to radiate their own inner beauty,” Imes said later. “It was a simple thing; I took two or three shots. None of the ‘sessions’ lasted more than 30 seconds.”
